As a new construction project, Insight Property Group set their sights on LEED Gold for their Lockwood Apartments, a boutique living community located in Capitol Hill. Insight opted for solar as the building’s energy sourcing as one part of its strategy to achieve this goal. Installing the solar infrastructure had the added benefit of helping the project meet the District’s Green Area Ratio requirements.
Insight chose Aurora Energy as the solar installer because of its knowledge of the DC marketplace and experience with installing large- sized arrays on residential buildings. By designing a dual tilt rooftop system, the Aurora team was able to maximize space for optimal generation. The system utilizes 484 X-series SunPower modules with SolarEdge string inverters.
As a company, part of Insight’s approach is to delve into the local history while thinking about what the future might look like. True to their method, Lockwood Apartments was named after a 19th century suffragist, while aiming to produce clean energy for a 20% offset of its common areas. The energy produced over the life of the system will prevent 3,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. New clean energy technology in a neighborhood with a storied past.
