As a horse farm and brewery, where they sustainably grow their own hops (as organically as possible), third-generation Waredaca owners Gretchen & Robert Butts understand the importance of stewardship. Recognized as agricultural stewards by the prestigious Maryland Farm Stewardship Certification and Assessment Program (FSCAP) they wanted to expand their eco-practices to the farm’s energy sourcing. With a number of building structures onsite, rooftop solar was the method they chose. Knowing the project would qualify for several different grants they were looking for an installer with experience to navigate them through the process.
Aurora Energy designed a 10.4 kW rooftop solar array for their onsite barn desigend to offset 100% of the structure’s electricity needs while also helping them capitalize on state and federal incentives including REAP and MEA grants.
The system will save the farm more than $49,000 over its lifetime, an added benefit to their total offset objective. And by preventing more than 245 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere by going solar, they can add another stewardship accolade to their thriving farm.
